Koen Schaad
I’m Koen Schaad, a graduate of DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in film and television production with minors in environmental science and photography. For most of college, I have wanted to work towards a career as a Science Communicator, however, for most of that time, I haven’t known the words to describe this field of work. Now, I am beginning to push myself towards that title with the work that I produce. Some of my photos will be scientific or concrete and some will be artistic or abstract, but all will show the beauty of the wildlife, nature, or scientific processes contained.
In Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s series Cosmos, he describes the burning of the Library of Alexandria, “When the mob came to burn the library, there were not enough people to defend it.” The key to the survival of science and knowledge itself is it belonging to and being shared by the masses. In that spirit, I hope to use this page and my future career to help inform as many people as possible (as well as learning many, many new things myself) and to be a defender for science and knowledge.
“Going to the woods is going home, for I suppose we came from the woods originally. But in some of nature's forests, the adventurous traveler seems a feeble, unwelcome creature; wild beasts and the weather trying to kill him, the rank, tangled vegetation, armed with spears and stinging needles, barring his way and making life a hard struggle.” - John Muir
